Now an SRMG-managed team of economists and environmental life cycle experts has developed the Consumer Environmental Index (CEI).  As any of us consume products and services, we are responsible for our own pollution footprint.  But is our footprint growing or shrinking?  The CEI answers that question by tracking the environmental impacts caused by production, use and disposal of the goods and services we consumers demand. 

The CEI is based on economic life cycle relationships, and actual consumer spending patterns.  It calculates the waste, energy and toxic impacts caused by the three stages of production, use, and disposal of goods and services purchased each year by consumers.  

The CEI is an index like the Consumer Price Index (CPI), except that the CEI tracks environmental impacts rather than prices, and encompasses all retail purchases rather than just a fixed subset of spending.  The initial version of the CEI covers the environmental impacts of consumer choices on climate change, public health, and ecosystems toxicity.  The CEI should go down when there are decreases in the toxics substances, wastes, and/or pollution associated with consumption of goods and services. 

Because it tracks the environmental impacts of purchases, the CEI can also be used by governmental agencies or businesses to guide efforts at reducing their environmental footprints and moving towards sustainability.
